As much as I like the idea of electric vehicles I have 6 problems with them:
- They require vast amounts of rare minerals, a lot of which are mined by children
- Every time you top up the battery, dendrites form inside the cells, degrading it, so you get less and less each charge
- They are a nightmare to recycle
- Replacing your old battery is more than 50% of the cost of the car
- They are more than likely to be charged using non-renewable sources
- If they catch fire (caused by dendrites shorting the cell), lithium cannot be put out by water
Don't get me wrong, we have been slaves to the petrol/diesel engine for more than 90 years, but at least I am not a hypocrite like the NZ Greens and Labour parties.
